Overview:
This position will work within the Zion Vegetation Program across multiple disciplines, including native plant propagation and nursery operations, seed collection, and assisting with sensitive plant surveys. The schedule will be four 10-hour days and includes at least one weekend day each month. Work will largely be performed outdoors and though based in Zion NP, may also include work at Cedar Breaks and Pipe Spring National Monuments. A uniform is required and provided, and on-the-job training and mentoring will also be made available.
Responsibilities:
The primary role will be working directly with the revegetation staff at Zion Native Plant Nursery. Interns can expect to be on their feet all day and in outdoor environments under all types of weather. Some duties will require bending, lifting, hiking, and carrying heavy objects.
Primary responsibilities:
-Assisting Nursery Manager with plant irrigation and various nursery tasks
-Performing wildland and field seed collection
-Working on irrigation systems in the greenhouse or shade house
-Cleaning, processing and storing seed
-Assisting with leading weekly volunteer groups
-Assisting Vegetation Program staff with plant surveys
Qualifications:
Applicants must enjoy working with visitors, have great interpersonal skills, and enjoy working outdoors in an environment that is often hot and dirty. Experience with plants is not required, but an interest and enthusiasm in plants and biological systems are a must. Applicants will be required to pass a background check and able to drive Park vehicles.
